PENPLUSBYTES - Empowering the Media through ICTs

International Institute for Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) Journalism (PenPlusBytes) is a registered company limited by guarantee since 18th July 2001. PenPlusBytes seeks to empower the media through the use of ICTs to advance the work of journalism. HIGHWAY AFRICA

Highway Africa is an annual ICT conference hosted by Rhodes University which is situated in Grahamstown, South Africa. Each year, more than 500 delegates from across the globe attend the conference to discuss issues relating to Internet governance, ICT policy and media for democracy. Highway Africa

Call for Scholarship Applications...

....to attend a short course on the Theory of Visual Communication for newspaper/magazine design environments at Rhodes University (South Africa). Penplusbytes has a limited number of scholarships for practicing Newspaper and Magazine designers with West African Print media organizations to attend a design course at the 11th Highway Africa Conference in Rhodes University, Grahamstown South Africa from 10th to 12th September 2007.


Background

This course introduces you to communication design. You will be introduced to visual theory, design as a profession, working on publications in a newsroom and designing for different audiences. This short course engages your already existing knowledge about what constitutes good newspaper/magazine design and will ask you to critique those 'facts' as assumptions, thereby shifting your own definitions.

PLEASE NOTE: Penplusbytes will not accept incomplete applications or applications that have missing documents. So please ensure you have all your documents intact before emailing them through.

Interested designers should submit the following information:

1. A curriculum vitae
2. Letter of support from their editor or relevant employer,
3. A hard copy of the Newspaper/Magazine you Design
4. A 300-word statement on why they are interested in participating in the course and what will be done with the skills and information acquired.

Please submit 1-3 of the above, all together, via email to design2007@penplusbytes.net by the 10th of July 2007.

A Hard Copy of the Newspaper or Magazine should be mailed to the address below:

Short listed candidates will be notified via email by 3rd August 2007
